âWith a black coffin and funeral bier, Leighton Royal Air Force Association mourned the death of its Battle of Britain Week carnival on Saturday.
âChairman of the Committee, Mr R Page, commented, âThis is the last time as far as I am concernedâ when only two decorated vehicle and one walking entry was receivedâŠ.
âPeople waiting for the carnival in Leighton High Street saw Heath Excelsior Band approaching, but instead of the expected gaily decorated floats and singing children, the band was followed by one vehicle carrying a black-draped coffin and wilted flowers.
âIt was attended by Mr R Page and Mr E Roede, wearing black silk hats. The âbierâ was decorated with placards bearing such slogans as âDeath of a beautiful dreamâ âIt didnât die, it faded away from lack of nourishmentâ and âThatâs yer lotâ
âThe âchief mournerâ was Mr Bernard Farr as âGeneral Apathyâ. He carried a placard which announced: âGeneral Apathy RIP/SOP/DOM and Bar leads to death of a carnival.â
“Possibly the RAFA will decide to abandon the carnival in future years and concentrate on the fete in parsons Close, which was its usual success and attracted large numbers of townsfolk.â
