“With a black coffin and funeral bier, Leighton Royal Air Force Association mourned the death of its Battle of Britain Week carnival on Saturday.
“Chairman of the Committee, Mr R Page, commented, “This is the last time as far as I am concerned” when only two decorated vehicle and one walking entry was received….
“People waiting for the carnival in Leighton High Street saw Heath Excelsior Band approaching, but instead of the expected gaily decorated floats and singing children, the band was followed by one vehicle carrying a black-draped coffin and wilted flowers.
“It was attended by Mr R Page and Mr E Roede, wearing black silk hats. The “bier” was decorated with placards bearing such slogans as “Death of a beautiful dream” “It didn’t die, it faded away from lack of nourishment” and “That’s yer lot”
“The “chief mourner” was Mr Bernard Farr as “General Apathy”. He carried a placard which announced: “General Apathy RIP/SOP/DOM and Bar leads to death of a carnival.”
“Possibly the RAFA will decide to abandon the carnival in future years and concentrate on the fete in parsons Close, which was its usual success and attracted large numbers of townsfolk.”
